Description: As part of its ongoing effort to provide its stakeholders with useful information on COVID-19, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) recently launched an online conversation about the impact of COVID-19 on retirement risks.

Description: In 2022, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute Committee on Finance Research (CFR) of the Investment Section in collaboration with the SOA Research Institute Catastrophic and Climate Strategic Research Program, published a research report on the impact of disaster events on investments. The report, The Impact of Disaster Events on Investment-Contagion Channels Perspective, which explored this issue from the perspective of contagion channels, provided a framework for further investigation. As a next step, CFR is seeking essays on how the concepts in the report and related studies may be practically applied in specific situations and recent experiences.

Description: This report series is being informed, in part, by online conversations of the listserv the SOA maintains for its Committee on Post-Retirement Needs and Risks, and the Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program. The listserv is comprised of professionals involved in retirement security issues from a wide variety of disciplines and perspectives. This report summarizes thoughts and questions raised during the conversation focused on how COVID-19 impacts families and their role in retirement and economic security across generations.

Description: Survey investigates the use of derivatives and related risk and valuation policies by pension funds and their external money managers.

Description: The current 50% reversion tax on the recovery of excess assets from a terminated defined benefit pension plan results in an asymmetric risk borne by pension plan sponsors. They are responsible for funding shortfalls but any surplus remaining at the termination of the plan is subject to punitive taxes. Pension reform will increase minimum funding levels to reduce the number of underfunded plans, which will increase the likelihood of surpluses that would be subject to punitive taxes. Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on all aspects of daily life and its impact extends to how disability incidence may play out in the future. Product profitability will be shaped by how morbidity patterns, interest rate levels and other key drivers will play out into the future. In this session, our panel will discuss COVID’s impact on IDI morbidity experience as observed over the past 18 months, offer comparisons and insights in light of other insurance lines of business, and share emerging information on the on-going effects of Long COVID. Highlights will also include how regional differences and implications for insurers as the industry moves further into the COVID vaccine era.
